Night time sports photography is probably the most demanding type of action photography you can attempt. Of course the problem with night time sports is having sufficient light for a fast enough shutter speed to stop the action (even under stadium lights). To capture the shots above I set my Nikon D300 to manual mode. The shutter speed was set to 1/500s (the minimum speed to stop the action and get less camera shake with the 300mm lens being used on a monopod while holding an umbrella to stay dry). The aperture was set to f/2.8. The Nikon D300 has a very useful ISO setting called "Auto ISO." I use this setting just about every time I shoot sports photography. Auto ISO will raise or lower the ISO setting of the camera to maintain proper exposure for the aperture and shutter speeds manually set. Thus for the top photo, the camera automatically adjusted the ISO to 6400 to maintain good exposure at 1/500 shutter speed and f/2.8 aperture. For the bottom photo, only 4500 ISO was needed at the same shutter speed and aperture settings.
